Did your university training cover everything you need to know? Mine certainly didn’t. Here is my current list of the best of the best learning that will change how you teach and how the students learn. Thanks to podcasts, audio books and webinars, we can access amazing professional learning without enrolling in a class and learn what we need to know while commuting, working out, walking the dog or doing chores without investing in tuition. Many education classes prepare you to teach children in the way an adult learns. Children have short attention spans, lack impulse control, are often dysregulated, get overwhelmed easily, are not self directed and don’t have a large enough knowledge base to make their own instructional choices. Many of us were taught that we have different learning styles and that everyone learns differently and that we need to teach this way. Did you know that this was a theory that has been completely discounted? We all learn in the same ways – we use our senses. Some of us learn quite easily with fewer repetitions and some of us require many more repetitions in order to master a skill. Trying to teach something in 8 different ways is doomed to failure. Let’s dig in to the research and make teaching easier.
