Book series: Facile à lire

Decodable books are books that the students can read by sounding out the words.  This teaches beginning readers to pay close attention to the letters instead of encouraging them to look at the pictures to guess what the word might be.  Although all of the words can be sounded out, students will need to be taught what all those sounds in the book are before they can read the book.  As well, many of the books contain words that students might not know already.  Before using the book, it’s important to introduce those words so that they make sense.  In the back of each book is a French/English page.  We want the students to think in French and to not be translating so the list is more of a guide for parents and teachers.  Describing a word, acting out the word or using a picture is more effective than giving the English equivalent.

We want students to read books several times.  Sometimes giving them a purpose each time helps.  First time – decoding, figuring out how to say the words.  Second time – thinking about what the words mean.  Third time – reading with expression and following the punctuation.
