La Roue

La Roue is a resource used in many French immersion schools to teach children to read. The key to La Roue is practice and mastering the sounds. This takes time and repetition. La Roue was created for French speaking children so students in immersion often are simply sounding out words without knowing what they mean. This web page is to help make La Roue come alive for your child.

  1. La Roue – with illustrations – Each page with words has been illustrated here for them so that they can learn what the words mean that they are learning to sound out.
  2. La Roue songs – The songs help the children remember what the letters blends say which is very helpful because they are different from English.
  3. La Roue homework – I have pre-recorded the pages being read so the children can see and hear what to do. Many years ago one of the teachers in our school division divided the book into homework practice sessions based on what he felt made sense for learning – in case you wonder why there is a lot of skipping around in the book!
  4. La Roue sounds – videos of each sound showing mouth position

4)La Roue sounds showing mouth formation. Each of the French sounds is repeated three times in these very short videos.  They are organized by the page number in La Roue.  We teach the sounds in a different order than the book uses so that is why the number below are not always in order. English sounds and French sounds can be quite different!
