In Kindergarten, Grade 1 and Grade 2 French immersion, the curriculum is organized not by subjects but by “contexts” or theme through which we teach the learning outcomes. All subjects are still covered but the goal is for students to learn and express themselves about topics that are age appropriate and interesting. Teachers might use music, literature, writing, field trips, games, play experiences, drama, art, science experiments, and videos to explore the contexts with the goal of enlarging the students’ ability to communicate, express their ideas and learn more about the world around them. The government curriculum frames the contexts using questions but here is the shortened version:
Kindergarten: Taking care of myself – routines, Winter & Seasons, Needs of Living Creatures, Homes, Holidays & Celebrations,
Grade 1: Being in Grade 1, Me, Healthy Eating, Clothing, Seasons, Animals, Senses, Sounds & Letters, Holidays & Celebrations
Grade 2: Friendship, Monsters & Giants, Weather, Food, Communication, Pets, Holidays & Celebrations
