Writing

This page starts with the very basics of holding a pencil correctly, learning to print each letter in a box, printing on lines, and copying sentences, poems and songs as a way to practice printing.

Pencil grip – English video

The thumb and index finger hold the pencil on opposite sides and the pencil rests on the middle finger. The ring and pinky fingers either are tucked into toward the palm or stay relaxed under the middle finger and do not touch the pencil. The pencil is not straight up in the air but rests between the thumb and index.

The following videos are for practice in printing. The students begin to use a lined notebook with room to illustrate what they have copied. We start with some basic sentences using lots of sight words, then we copy the Jeu du Loup sentences and draw a picture of what is happening in the sentence so that the children understand the words they are reading. Finally, we copy songs we are learning and draw a picture. Becoming a good printer is an important building block in being able to write thoughts and ideas. Grade 1 is an important year for practicing our printing skills.
